Case Study: Dual-Robot Cell FOR PCR Test Processing
Automated PCR Test Processing with Dual-Robot Cell
Zero-error laboratory automation for maximum safety by Femitec
To ensure safe and reliable handling of SARS-CoV-2 PCR samples, Femitec developed an advanced laboratory cell featuring two cooperating six-axis robots – a novelty in laboratory technology.
The system fully automates the entire handling process: from tube removal and barcode scanning to cap opening, precise pipetting, and secure resealing – contactless and designed for continuous 24/7 operation.
Medical engineering
- High contamination risk during manual handling
- Varying tube geometries and screw forces
- Ergonomic strain and human error potential
- Absolute zero-defect process required
- Fully automated PCR handling cell
- Two cooperative six-arm robots
- Flexible, high-precision gripping systems
- Real-time data exchange between robots
- Developed from scratch within five months
The cell integrates two FD-H5 six-axis robots from OTC DAIHEN. Working in parallel, they remove tubes, scan barcodes, open caps, pipette exactly 0.2 ml of sample material, reseal the tubes, and return them to the tray – non-stop.
Maximum process reliability, consistent quality, and significant relief for laboratory staff – with human error virtually eliminated.
